Solar goes where land is cheap, and land is cheap partly because the ground is bad. Soft clays, silts, peat, a high water table. Then the site has to carry delivery trucks, cranes and pile rigs across it for months.

The claim to test on your own numbers is up to a 70% reduction in aggregate thickness. Whether you get near that depends on the subgrade, but even a fraction of it moves real money on a site with miles of access road, because aggregate is priced twice: once to import and place it, and again in the excavated material you haul away to make room for it.

The reason it works is confinement. Aggregate locked into the geogrid apertures behaves as a stiffer composite layer rather than as loose stone, so a thinner section carries the same load.
