Installation Guidelines

How to Install Petromat Paving Interlayers

Solmax's guideline for asphalt overlays over Petromat Enviro, MPV, MPG and MPM, from working out what to order off the plans through surface prep, binder, laying the interlayer and paving over it. Ends with what to put in a bid.

What it covers

  • Working out roll widths and quantities off the plans before you order
  • Storage and handling, including the exposed roll ends
  • Surface preparation
  • Asphalt binder installation
  • Laying the interlayer
  • Paving over it
  • The factors that decide whether the installation succeeds
  • What to include in your bids

Notes from us

This replaced the old Propex guide in March 2026 and it is a better document. One guideline now covers Enviro, MPV, MPG and MPM instead of one per product, and it starts a step earlier than the old one did: with the takeoff.

Order off the lane width, not off the square yardage. A 12 ft lane wants a 12.5 ft roll. A 28 by 50 ft pickleball court wants 10 ft rolls, three widths across. Get that wrong and you pay for it twice, in wasted material and in the binder under every extra overlap.

Two numbers from the ordering section worth writing down. Keep overlaps under 18 inches, because every inch of overlap is binder you buy and do not use. And allow 5% for overlap waste when you order, more if the job is full of curves.

Cut with a reciprocating blade, not a circular saw. That one line has probably saved more rolls than anything else in the document.

Section 8, “What to include in your bids”, is the reason to hand this to whoever prices the work rather than only to the crew. Interlayer jobs get underbid on the binder and the sweeping, not on the fabric.

Road Fabrics installs paving interlayers rather than selling them by the roll. We run the distributor trucks and the crews, so the binder rate, the temperature window and the takeoff are ours to get right. Tell us about the job.
