The longitudinal joint is where an asphalt pavement usually starts failing, and it fails because it is the one place you cannot compact properly. J-Band® goes in as a band under the joint and migrates up into the void, so the joint ends up at a density the roller could never have given it.

The Champaign project is the part worth reading. Real numbers on a real IDOT job: 12 miles of rehab, 19,000 gallons over 23 centerline miles, an 18 in band between binder and surface. It is a useful thing to put in front of an agency that has not specified this before, because it is not a lab result.

Two operational details in there that decide whether it works. The distributor has to heat above 300°F with continuous agitation in the tank, and the paving crew has to centre and compact the joint over the middle of the band. Get the second one wrong and the material is in the wrong place, which no amount of product quality fixes.
