J-Band^® VRAM Application Checklist

The May 2026 revision is roughly twice the document the old one was, and the reason is worth knowing: it now covers what happens after the band goes down. The earlier checklists ended at “traffic can cross once it cools to 130°F”. This one keeps going into paving and compaction, which is where a J-Band^® joint is actually won or lost.

The three numbers that decide the application itself are unchanged. Apply between 265°F and 320°F, check the rate within the first 1,000 ft and every 12,000 ft after, and let it cool to 130°F before anything drives across. Vehicles may cross the band, but they must never stop on it or drive along its length.

What is new is the paving section, and two items in it catch people out. Set the paver end plate to split the band, so the finished joint lands halfway across the material rather than off to one side. And raise the end plate or grade ski clear of the band so it does not drag through it, by at least half an inch over a fine-graded mix.

Then the compaction rules, which are mostly a list of what not to do. No pneumatic rollers directly over the band. Let the drum overhang the mat edge by a few inches rather than riding the inside edge. Take care with SMA, where the wrong rolling pattern flushes the joint.

One line saves a phone call every season: the fresh mat over the band may feel spongy underfoot for several minutes. That is the membrane hot and migrating up into the mix, which is the product working. It stiffens as it cools.

Two practical additions worth flagging to whoever runs the job. Sampling should come off the spigot, not the spray bar, to avoid contamination, and the applicator should keep a sister sample whenever the agency takes one. And if you are cutting rumble strips over the band with the surface above 120°F, water the area down first.
