Tensar's alternative when cement, lime or fly ash is short or slow: a mechanically stabilized layer designed to meet or exceed the chemically stabilized section, with an alternate submittal package to get it approved.
The flyer is pegged to the cement and lime shortage of a few years ago, so read the framing as dated. The argument underneath it is not. Chemical stabilization needs a material with a supply chain, a weather window and a cure time. Geogrid needs a truck.
The genuinely useful part is the third bullet: an alternate submittal package. Substituting a mechanically stabilized section for a chemically stabilized one that is already specified is an approval problem before it is an engineering problem, and Tensar will produce the project-specific design and the submittal to put in front of the engineer or owner. That is the bit that usually stops people proposing the swap.
Worth considering whenever chemical stabilization is on the plans and the schedule is tight, not only when the binder is unavailable. Cure time is time.
