Installation guidelines for Mirafi MTK, the self-adhesive rubberised asphalt membrane used on joints, cracks, lane widening seams and bridge decks, with a separate procedure for discrete repairs and for full deck waterproofing.
MTK is the answer when the problem is a line rather than an area. A widening joint, a patch edge, a working crack in concrete. Putting a full-width interlayer across a pavement to deal with one seam is expensive and slower than it needs to be.
It comes in four widths, from 12 in up to 36 in, and picking the right one is most of the job. The membrane has to be wide enough to span the movement zone either side of the joint, not just cover the crack, or it tears at the edge of the bond instead of stretching across it.
Peel and stick is unforgiving about surface prep in a way that a sprayed tack is not. The mastic bonds to what is there. If what is there is dust, it bonds to dust. There is no window to fix that later.
Worth knowing: no special equipment. A utility knife cuts both the product and the release sheet, which makes this something a small crew can do properly without hiring anything in.
