How to Install Mirafi MPM Paving Mat

Installation guidelines for the Mirafi MPM30 and MPM50 paving mats under a hot mix overlay: surface preparation, tack grade and temperature, and placing the mat.

What it covers

  • Sweeping, crack filling and levelling before the mat goes down
  • Repairing structurally failed areas first
  • Tack grades, with emulsions and cutbacks ruled out
  • Tack temperature in the truck
  • Placing the mat, and keeping it dry until the overlay lands

Notes from us

The line that saves the most trouble: no additional tack over the mat before the overlay. MPM carries its own binder, and crews used to plain paving fabric often add a coat out of habit, which is how you end up with bleed-through.

The mat has to be dry twice over. Dry surface before it goes down, and dry mat before the overlay lands on it. Rain between those two points is not a delay you can pave through, because the delamination shows up months later and not where you can see it.

Same rule as the rest of the paving fabric family on tack: neat paving grade or polymerised, 325 to 400°F in the truck, and no emulsions or cutbacks whatever is already in the yard.

Road Fabrics installs this rather than selling it by the roll. We run the distributor trucks and crews, so the tack rate, the temperature and the dry-surface call are ours to get right. Tell us about the job.
